My passion is working outdoors, on-site (en plein air) to paint the landscape with all of my senses on high alert. My goal is to always capture the more elusive moments in time and space, wherever I paint in the world.
I have lived and worked on Lopez Island since 1974, when I moved here from WSU at Pullman, WA, with Shirley Wright and Bern Sundell, as a partner to build and start-up the legendary "Grayling Gallery" on Lopez Island. We had all earned MFA's and taught classes at WSU in painting and sculpture prior to our adventuresome move to Lopez.
Pure pigment Pastel is my preferred medium as it allows me to work quickly and decisively - layering colors to achieve affects that no other medium can provide. It is the art-world's most permanent artists medium made from pure earth pigments that have stood the test of time since cave painters first used it over 30,000 years ago. Water and atmospheric affects that occur in the San Juan Islands have become my favorite subjects. I also work in oils, watercolor, acrylics, gauche and all drawing mediums.
My artwork has won over 70 top awards and honors in juried international art competitions (especially plein air) and resides in Art museums, National Parks, corporate and private collections around the world. It has been published in several leading fine art magazines and books. I have juried national art shows and am often invited to give lectures and live painting demos at established art organizations around the country.
In 1975, I became the first ever full-time art teacher at Lopez School, before I started my own graphic arts business (lsland Graphics -1980) and founded The Islands Weekly Newspaper (1983), that was sold to Sound Publishing in 2001. I continue to teach pastel workshops, with well over 1200 students enrolled over the past 2 decades in the U.S. and Europe. In 2018 I was sponsored and voted into the prestigious Salmagundi Club (NYC), America's oldest art organization (founded 1871).
